Smuggling With Jesus? A New Book in Progress by Hank Cooper: Started 2/2/2010
Smuggling With Jesus? is a book I have been wanting to write for many years now, since the late 80's at least. It may be good for a screenplay but that is yet to be seen. It is not yet published and I am still trying to figure out which way to go when it comes to self publishing or traditional publishing. A sample chapter is on this website and can be accessed from the Sidebar on the left. It may say Bolivia or it may say Sample Chapter, I keep changing it. If anyone has feedback for me on the subject I would welcome it wholeheartedly. So thank you very much for reading and commenting on this for me. Thanks again Hank Cooper
It is a story about two people that were destined to meet, although for no real purpose other than to get ourselves mixed up in things that were way over our heads, but would somehow come out unharmed by another situation that develops or divine intervention, you be the judge. Hank believes his roots are from the Kazarian Empire, which was ruled by people who were called a Kagan, his mother's family name, meaning Kazarian Kings, who made all the decisions including which religion to follow, what kind of army to have etc. They were a very fierce race and protected their subjects with a stable, free open society and had the world's leading economy at the time which lasted for almost 500 years. He had trouble saying no to people, so when he was asked by Bernie, after a meeting at a party one night, to go on a trip to Bolivia, he said sure, without even thinking what he could get himself into there. A trait that would repeat itself over and over again in different dangerous situations in many drug producing regions of the world.
Bernie was a much more complex character and is subject of much conjecture in this book. He was born on Christmas Day and died an inexplicable death on Easter Sunday of his 30th year, in what can only be called an act of God. His mother was sweet as any mother could be, an antiquities dealer, her name was Mary and the father was never talked about, but was a doctor as far as I knew. He did seem to be able to see into the future and had an extraordinary ability to do anything he wanted no matter how dangerous or complicated it may have been, and nothing at all scared him so he lived as reckless as he wished, almost as if he knew that he couldn't die at that time and was tempting someone or something. The backgrounds and theory of these two characters are, of course not scientifically proved, and are the thoughts of the author, but the situations that happened to them and the people they would meet are exactly as they happened. It is eventually up to the reader to make their own conclusions because real life is indeed stranger than fiction.
Thank you for taking the time today.Share
Preface to Smuggling With Jesus?
From the age of 8 hank Cooper has been recounting the times he cheated death. His life was anything but normal and he is left with one reoccurring thought, that the strings of his life was being pulled by unseen forces. By his mid thirties he was cheating not only death but long prison sentences in 3rd, 4th and even 5th world countries, in the span of a 20 year career in cocaine and heroin smuggling in some of the most dangerous places. The people that would be put in his path at the most crucial times, over and over again fueled this perception of something almost supernatural intervening in his his life. Was it to save him from any harm, and if so why? If there are unseen forces, who or what are they? He would question this after each miraculous escape from whatever situation that was presenting the difficult challenge at the time. He doesn't know whether to believe in destiny. luck or divine intervention, all theories don't make any sense to him.
He would meet two partners 10 years apart who took him on journeys to the most off beat paths in the drug trade, where foreigners rarely go. The first book deals with the character Bernie Shul who he travels with and is right hand man to in his drug empire. This book is a type of a dedication to him and in some way a testament that he did exist, as a Google search for him or any member of his family comes up blank. It's as if Bernie Shul never existed, but Hank Cooper had his body flown back from Colombia to Canada and his body is buried in the same cemetery as Hank's mother, where he places stones on their graves when in Toronto.
Bernie was born December 25th 1950 and died April 6th 1980 which was Easter Sunday in that year. He didn't want to talk about his father so I never asked, his mother Mary was the sweetest woman/mother I knew, next to my own mother that was from a family tree that goes back to the Kazarian Empire, and is one of the reasons Hank thinks Bernie and the other mystery people who pop in and out of his life to correct any wrongs, or make wrongs if that is what is needed.
There were many times we should have died, and just as many times we could have been taken prisoner and jailed forever after being tortured probably. But for some strange reason, something would happen and we would carry on our merry way, not even thinking about how lucky we were. Nobody I ever knew in that business got out of that number of delicate situations. So many before us and after us would attempt the same kind of trip and may have been lucky once or even twice, but to keep on going for two decades, leaves one to wonder if the word luck even applies here. People would magically appear and help us out of the mess we found ourselves in, almost to the point that many times I would fear a setup situation, like how the CIA, KGB and Mossad work in far away places, and I ran in to a couple agents like that befriending people for information. Once your on the radar of one of these agents it's just a matter of time before they pull you in.
From cocaine adventures high in the Andes to dealings with cozy Afghan heroin dealers who would, a decade later, become the Taliban and almost cut off my head because of George Bush!
Smuggling With Jesus? This is my book in progress about drug dealing with a twist. There were many times we should have died, and just as many times we could have been taken prisoner and jailed forever.
